“Poems are made of lines, which are actual breaths, and so the poem’s rhythms, its time, is at the scale and pace and tempo of the body, the tempo of our bodies lit with our dying…”
Ross Gay
This week I've been reading Ross Gay's book of essays "Inciting Joy" (more on this to come) and this comment about poetry gave me pause for thought. Because of course a drawing is also made of lines, which are actual breaths, which are moments in time, at the scale and tempo of the body. Breath and line together form a quiet rhythm that passes through the the body and connects it with the materials used, with the moving air and the living world. Drawing, writing, breathing all emerge out of this interaction and interdependence.
I have just finished my first drawings of the new year, a suite of four small pieces.
