Oh my gosh what incredible art!! The detail swallows me up just as much as the whole picture. It's mesmerising! (from a fellow orkney islands substacker 😊)

Hello Rebecca! Lovely to connect with you and welcome to Substack and to Birsay! Sorry I've been slow to respond - I was away south visiting family and catching up with old friends (including a fellow evolutionary biologist)

Thanks so much Sam for inviting us into your studio. I’m always fascinated to learn of your creative processes. I hope you thoroughly enjoy the time away while The Life Boat is in dry dock.

A beautiful and generous insight into your work and practice. Thanks, Sam. I'll see you in a few weeks and trust you have some comfy shoes for those exhibitions. It would be lovely to hear what you've seen. I'm really hoping to get down to London in September for the Now You See Us - women artists in Britain 1520-1920 at the Tate.

Thank you for this insight into your process. What beautiful ethereal work. I’ve tried refillable pens with little success, are you prepared to share the make of the ones you use before I spend any more money! It would be so

much more planet friendly than buying endless throwaway plastic ones.

Thank you Liza! These ones are by Molotow. I do have to pull out and rinse the nibs in hot water from time to time as they dry up/block/blob, and some size nibs are more reliable than others I find. I do change nibs quite often too.

Many thanks. Haven’t tried those. Think I’ve been too ambitious with my choice of super fine nibs and the wrong, clogging inks!

I like their 1.5 mm nibs. Easier to clean off than the finer 1mm ones as the ink runs down tiny grooves on the outside so you can dunk it in hot water. They wear out but you can just replace them.

Love this Sam! Also very interested in those re-fillable pens, going to have to check those out! Hope you have a really good break x

There’s quite a few coming on the market now. These ones are by Molotow but I have some unbranded ones too.
