Thanks so much. Will be rereading, in a larger screen so as to see the images better — so much to think about here, especially (for me, in any case) on place and displacement and working one’s way through that with the rigor of art. Really wonderful.
yes, Mary's paintings deserve a decent screen - they are so subtle and I bet they're really hard to photograph too. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
I'm reading The Clearing during the down times in the jury room. It is the perfect reflection when I'm being asked to make a decision on what happens next in some people's lives.
This was fantastic to read, through and through. Attention to landscape, to approaching the page with not knowing--all so real and vital. Thank you for sharing this rich conversation--and introducing me to Mary's work! Beautiful. 💜
She's a star. I'm so glad she's finally been able to move back 'home' to Harris. It's a very special place. Spectacular beauty. Also there's been a move recently toward community land ownership and management, after centuries of absentee landlordism. So it's fascinating too.
Your essay made my morning, Samantha. You so wonderfully captured your interactions with Mary Thompson while skillfully keeping the focus on Mary’s thoughts and techniques around her painting.
This, for me, was like having a front row seat to hear two fascinating artists discuss their art. With Glacis complimenting the presentation in soft, gentle tones. So grateful.
It's a beautifully atmospheric piece of music isn't it - seemingly the first of four, each pertaining to a season, with this first one, 'Perseverance,' being Winter.
Well said, Samantha. Unlike any I’ve ever heard. Spiritual in the sense I recognize “Great Spirit” as encompassing the Universe. Magical in the way of suddenly revealing a new quality we weren’t expecting. So glad the composition appeared in your essay today, by the porridge bowl.
Kenneth White! That poem! The shimmering light!
Geopoetics. paintings that sing of wind and place..
Restacking this fine piece to Notes.
Thanks Michael! It's a high blue day here today, so White's poem is running through my head, calling me outside into the unlettered light...
You have a very great good fortune to be where you are- a place only partly geographical. 🙂

Yes, the bigger screen made such a difference. Liked them very much, as well as the discussion.
I shall miss you all today cast adrift on jury service. Back next week into creative comfort.
Oh my, I hope it's a straightforward case...I've somehow managed to never be called, but I know some people who keep getting called back!

Oh gosh - that must feel like a big responsibility. I hope you're enjoying the book! BTW I clean forgot to record our session yesterday - sorry!

Lovely interview! Layers of concepts to consider. Thank you!
I really enjoyed putting it together - thank you!
